Lumia’s potential grows as research continues
Chemicals company Soko Chimica has spoken of the enthusiastic industry reaction to its latest product, Lumia, and said the scope of its benefits are greater than first thought.

Over the last 10 years or so, the denim industry has been researching alternatives to potassium permanganate and hypochlorite to achieve fading effects and vintage looks, and has created alternatives often based on oxidising agents.

However, these can sometimes affect the fabric strength, damage metal parts in the machinery or affect workers’ health, according to the Italian company.

Lumia is activated by ozone and does not need heat. It's easy to control because it works in dry conditions and it can be applied locally or full-body, highlighting laser details, or giving an overall bleach effect once nebulised inside the machine, according to Soko.

Soko works with fabric mills to develop products and create sustainable collections, so the whole process results in  products with a lower impact on the environment.

Lumia has been used in Spanish mill Tejidos Royo´s denim collection, dyed with one of the most sustainable systems on the market - Dry Indigo / Dry Black - and described the results as "optimal and surprising".

Luca Braschi, a consultant at Soko, said: “Thanks to the many applications we made so far, we realised that its potential is even bigger than we thought at the beginning. Customers are really excited.”

“We initially developed Lumia as a potassium permanganate alternative, then many laundries that have tried it found the full-body bleaching even more interesting, particularly appreciating the fact of being able to bleach garments without water and without the complications due to the use of hypochlorite.”

Lumia is patent-pending, and is certified GOTS, ZDHC Level 3 and ECO-PASSPORT by Oeko-tex. For more information, visit Lumia's web page.
