Soko unveils its first PP replacement

Italian chemicals company Soko Chimica has launched a product that it bills as its first replacement for potassium permanganate (PP), after years of searching for an alternative.

Authentica is added to the garments, is heat activated in the dryer and then stops working, meaning that it does not keep fading at room temperature.

It is also easier to control than some acidic alternatives, claims the company, and creates authentic looks.

Luca Braschi, Soko’s marketing technology manager, said:  “This provides a cleaner white, compared to PP which can create a dusty white. Authentica does not release any acidity on the fabric, which means it does not affect the tear strength of the fabric, and once it’s reacted it stops, which means it’s controllable in production. But what we mostly like is the look. With Authentica, you still feel the texture of the fabric, it feels very natural.”

Mr Braschi also confirmed the increased industry pick-up of its Lumia agent, which achieves stone bleach effects in dry conditions using an ozone machine, replacing several chemicals and processes – such as bleaches, caustic soda, peroxide, detergent and stones - and slashing water usage.

“People are starting to understand it now – maybe three years ago when we launched, people were not ready for something completely new,” he said. “They were surprised to see the garment turn from dark to light in air, they thought it was impossible. But now, more manufacturers have ozone machines, they are starting to use them to their full potential and are seeing this is a real alternative.”
