Scale of upcycling project on display in Tokyo
Following an initial display of 150 product samples late last year, Ryoji Yamazawa’s project to reprocess 20 tonnes of discarded Levi’s 501 jeans has most recently resulted in an exhibition of over 200 upcycled styles, created by more than 60 brands.

The launch event was held at Tokyo's high-end Isetan Shinjuku department store, a long-time supporter of the initiative, although other local retailers have set aside competition to participate in selling the limited-edition articles on display until the window for doing so closes on April 5.

Building on the earlier show’s “denim in the future” theme, brands including Sergio Rossi, Golden Goose and Pellico have once again collaborated with Mr Yamazawa and Isetan ReStyle buyer Shota Kamiya on transforming the imported denim into apparel and footwear, plus various handbags and accessories, hats, toys, furniture and even works of art.

Isetan commented that the eco-minded, upcycled exhibition is intended to serve as a medium for communicating and imagining a "new future in fashion", across the creative industries.
