Japan’s Toyokazu saves sewing jobs in Akita
Japanese jeans dyeing and washing company Toyokazu, based in Kurashiki city in Okayama prefecture, has acquired the Akita Jose jeans sewing business, an Akita-based subsidiary of local denim brand Edwin.

The deal covers four factories which had originally closed in September following sluggish sales related to covid-19, plus rising demand for low-priced denim jeans in the country.

Toyokazu reportedly plans to restart the business, initially rehiring a factory manager and around 40 employees. At the time of the factories’ closing earlier in the year, local media said that almost 210 locals had been employed by Akita Jose.

A spokesperson for the purchaser told WWD Japan that it had acted to protect already declining jeans production in the country, to which sewing skills are central. Considering the time and effort required to train workers and develop infrastructure, Toyakazu stated, the idea of establishing a totally new factory had not been realistic.
