Murakami’s influence lifts upcycled denim prices

A limited-edition capsule of vintage Levi’s jeans upcycled by Japanese designer Yuta Hosokawa, known by the name Readymade, has launched at local store Tonari no Zingaro, priced at roughly $3,200 or ¥418,000 apiece.

The shop is affiliated with Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and his art production company, Kaikai Kiki.

Fittingly, each light-wash pair of denim jeans has been embroidered with the artist’s smiling flowers motif across the legs, pockets and waistband, and also features flower-shaped silver stud buttons and metal rivets in the shape of a skull.

Every pair is a one-of-a-kind “gem”, Tonari no Zingaro said, predicting that the fusion of vintage denim, contemporary art and Readymade’s hand in the design process would make the garments attractive to collectors.

Readymade has previously collaborated with creatives including Virgil Abloh for Off-White, plus fashion brand Chrome Hearts.
