Mohsin Sajid: Kingston denim outcomes ‘probably the finest’ ever
A twelve-week denim programme by UK-based denim designer, consultant and educator Mohsin Sajid at Kingston University London recently concluded with the announcement of three winners and one special mention.
The project was supported by Inside Denim and influential industry players Kingpins Show and Lenzing’s Tencel fibre brand, with support also coming from producers including Bossa, Candiani, Cone, Denim Privé/Kassim and Hewitt Denim Mills.
All threads used were supplied by Coats, with metal trims provided by YKK.
Mr Sajid said that the project’s creative outcomes were “probably the finest” out of all those he had seen in his 18 years of teaching denim history and design. He described the level of professionalism exhibited by the course’s students as outstanding. “In my personal opinion, there was not a single weak group,” he added.
Following 45 minutes of deliberations between judges present both virtually and physically, group 17 (supported by Cone and Bossa) was announced as the overall womenswear winner, whereas group three (Bossa and Candiani) ranked first in the menswear category. Group 18 won best overall project, having received fabrics from Bossa, Denim Privé and Hewitt Denim Mills. Meanwhile, group 14 (supplied by Bossa and Candiani) received a special mention for their efforts.
The judging panel included Andrew Olah of Olah Inc and Kingpins Show, Ozge Özsoy from Bossa, Cone’s Gabriel Magopat, Danielle Arzaga from Candiani, Arzu Turgay of Coats, Hewitt Denim Mills’ Chris Hewitt, Katie Doherty from YKK and denim specialists Miles Johnson, Sue Barrett, Leanne Jae and Harmony Genovese.
Upcoming denim education projects of Mr Sajid’s include more courses over the summer at both London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins.
