Raddis Cotton lands first long-term collaboration
Raddis Cotton seeks to build a better future for smallholder cotton farmers through a seed-to-product platform that connects the farmers with global brands and retailers through a novel ‘soil subscription’ service.

The concept, set up by Indo-Dutch social enterprise Yassasree, supports cotton farmers in South India, and specifically the more vulnerable tribal female farmers, who want to shift to organic and regenerative farming practices. It bills itself a ‘holistic ecosystem’ that covers a wide array of services and training to improve farmer’s livelihoods, biodiversity and soil health.

UK-based intimate apparel brand Bedstraw + Madder, which won Draper’s sustainable fashion award in 2022, took a soil-subscription for 25 acres of farmland last year. Cotton seeds were sowed in July 2021, and the first products made from Raddis Cotton will be available this coming September.

Over the next five years, Raddis said it intends to convert 25,000 acres of farmland from degenerative to regenerative agriculture, which it says will have a positive impact on the health of farmers, through reducing the use of pesticides and securing higher income for them; and the environment, by increasing soil’s water retention capacity and ability to sequester carbon, to name just a few.

For the coming sowing season 2022 the on-boarding of new brand partners is in full speed, said Raddis brand catalyst Niccy Kol. “What is special about this collaboration is the mind shift: brands invest in the beginning of the cotton value chain and share the risk, responsibilities and progress from seed to shelf.”
