Previously, Mud Jeans had got as far as incorporating 40% post-consumer recycled cotton. This latest push involved two different spinning techniques, which was by far the most challenging part of the process, said co-founder Dion Vijgeboom.
The method, developed in partnership with local university Saxion, was realised as part of the company's ‘Road to 100’ project, which began in 2019 and concluded with the unveiling of a pair of men’s denim shorts (pictured) made from 100% post-consumer recycled cotton.
Created from 33% chemically recycled and 67% mechanically recycled cotton, Mr Vijgeboom acknowledged that the prototype fabric was slightly softer than conventional denim, but that this was likely to change over time in line with the proportion of chemically recycled denim present in the blend. He also added that post-consumer cellulosic fibres other than cotton, such as hemp, may similarly form part of Mud Jeans’ 100% recycled blends in the future.
Next steps involve scaling production and making the resulting denim more affordable, something which Mr Vijgeboom stated he expected the brand would make progress on within the next year.
