Çalik Denim bets on biodegradability
Calik Denim has chosen to introduce its B210 biodegradable fabrics at the Kingpins show in SugarCity, Amsterdam, on now. The Turkish mill says that its B210 will biodegrade in soil in 210 days, thus its name. “In tests it has been found that these fabrics will disintegrate by 99.38%,” Selen Ergul tells Inside Denim.

The result of a special technology, B210 can be applied to all the mill’s fabrics, whatever their composition and proportion of synthetic fibres. Furthermore, if the garment is washed, which is very often the case, it will biodegrade in an even shorter time, around 90 days, she says.

Biodegradability has been slowly emerging as one of many trends in sustainability, and Calik’s B210 range adds another offering to the market. It is positive in that if ever a garment were left in nature, it won’t stay forever and be a source of pollution, says Ms Ergul.

B210 also offers a solution to the issue of fibre fragmentation and microplastics pollution. Textiles are said to be the source of 35% of microplastics in nature according to a 2017 report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUNC). Products made in Calik Denim’s new B210 should dissolve, and be gone, in less than a year.
