Levi’s recreates oldest design for anniversary
To celebrate the anniversary of Levi Strauss & Co patenting its riveted pants on May 20, 1873, the Levi’s Vintage Clothing team recreated the brand’s earliest design, the 9Rivet.

LS&Co Historian Tracey Panek and Vintage design director Paul O’Neill confirmed the design  — named for having only nine rivets instead of the usual 11 — is the oldest pair of blue jeans in its archives.

Mr O’Neill said: “Of the various 1870s blue jeans in the Levi’s Archives, I always suspected 9Rivet was the oldest.

“After confirming it is in fact the oldest we have, we were thrilled to reproduce all of its quirks and details that collectively capture a unique piece of denim history.”

Made with 9-ounce plain selvedge Cone Mills White Oak denim and featuring exposed rivets and an unriveted centre-back cinch, the run is limited to 800 pairs.
