Orta builds on Gama partnership to advance circularity goals

Turkish denim mill Orta has explained how its relationship with recycling specialist Gama has helped drive its ambitions towards a circular way of working.

Its waste management system sorts and separates waste, then sends it to Gama (also based in Turkey), which converts it into fibres that can be woven into new material. The companies have been working together for four years, with their R&D teams jointly working on new products.

Speaking at Kingpins24, Orta director Dr Sedef Uncu Aki said: “We need materials to fulfil our needs and wants, but we need to be mindful. Our sector will only be free of our bad reputation when we start looking at our waste as a resource.”

Orta applies its Golden Ratio philosophy to designing with recycled content, so the recycled fibres don’t weaken the fabrics.

In two years, Orta increased its recycled cotton content from 0 to 650,000kg and is aiming for 1 million kgs this year. In 2020, 20% of product contained recycled fibre blends.

Ms Aki added: “Our partnership with Gama will help expand our Golden Ratio standard for creating  the most durable and eco-positive denim fabrics. We are envisaging a future where collaborations are enabled in every step, from farm to fashion, and circled back. We want to reduce reliance on natural resources and build a waste-free ecosystem that enables a longer, healthier life for us and the planet.”
