Denim experts line up for SDG-accelerating platform

Denim mills are among companies represented at a month-long  virtual event to boost the fashion industry’s understanding and adoption of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Artistic Milliners director Murtaza Ahmed and Orta’s R&D director, Sedef Uncu Aki, will join Lenzing’s director of global business development, Tricia Carey, and Andrew Olah, founder of denim fair and media platform Kingpins, as part of a roster of fashion industry representatives during December’s ‘Discover the SDGs’ event.

The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere and were adopted by United Nations Member States in 2015.

The Decade of Action, launched by the UN Secretary-General at the beginning of 2020, calls for governments, public organisations and the private sector to accelerate sustainable solutions to the world’s major challenges including poverty, climate change and inequality.

Annemarie Hou, acting executive director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, said: “This is a critical time to accelerate partnerships to address the world's biggest challenges – from eliminating poverty, hunger and inequalities to reversing climate change and unsustainable consumption and production practices. The fashion industry is an important ally for the United Nations in this Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs by 2030.”

‘Discover the SDGs’, organised by the Conscious Fashion Campaign in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships, is open to all and free of charge.
