Levi’s reveals the ‘real fifth pocket’

Denim brand Levi’s has 'corrected' its famous 1996 ‘pool boy’ advert that named the little pocket inside the front right pocket as ‘the fifth pocket’.

As part of a denim history blog, Levi’s points out that one was part of the original 1873 design, and was made to house a pocket watch.

The early pants were called “waist overalls” and included the button fly, copper rivets, blue denim and Arcuate stitching (stitching pattern on the back).

It said: “There was also one — yes, just one — pocket on the back side of the overalls. This single back pocket design lasted for several decades until 1901, when we added a second back pocket to our riveted overalls.

“Today celebrate the five-pocket jean featuring the second back pocket — the real 'fifth pocket' — as an essential clothing staple all over the world.”
