Kingpins Latin America: 'push-up' jeans and seasonless denim
Digital denim show Kingpins24 Flash Latin America concluded recently, following two days of talks from November 9 to 10.

The final day’s presentations included a group discussion on the topic of regional design, moderated by Veronica Fourcade of Argentinian jeanswear consultancy Jungle Denim.

Ms Fourcade was joined by members of the denim community in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and her own country, Argentina. Insights from Spain were also offered.

Of particular note were comments made by Brazilian designer and founder of Stolfo Denim, Julia Paula Pereira, who suggested that her peers up and down the country had increasingly begun to look to Brazil's own heritage for denim inspiration, as opposed to Europe and the United States, in recent years, particularly when it comes to denim culture and materials.

The resulting designs – the fruits of a vertically integrated denim industry in Brazil, the world’s fourth largest cotton producer – chime particularly well with “our own people, our own tropical climate”, Ms Pereira said.

Colombian fashion designer Sergio Andres Cajiao, currently textile manager at Stilotex in Bogota, divided his country’s appetite for denim into three jean segments: “push-up” (an especially popular style which meets local demand for a more sculpted silhouette), “mom fit” and “boyfriend”.

Mr Cajiao also mentioned Colombia’s lack of distinct seasons as an important design consideration, particularly when it comes to fabric choice, especially given how the nation can experience different climates simultaneously. In Colombia, jean shorts are worn according to the climate, rather than the season, for example. “If you do not have the right fabric, you waste all the work,” he emphasised.

All participants stressed the significance of sustainable design, education and manufacturing to the advancement of the contemporary Latin American denim industry.
