Recycrom headlines live event in Milan
Upcycling “waste” from pre-existing fabrics was a central component to a launch event jointly held in Milan recently by collaborators Blue of a Kind (a local label which only makes clothing from repurposed materials) and Italian chemicals manufacturer Officina+39.

The in-store event marked the unveiling of an upcycled t-shirt collection designed by Blue of a Kind using Officina+39’s patented Recycrom dyestuffs, alongside a live “painting” performance by artist Erik Varusio, who customised several articles using Recycrom dyes.

As the chemicals company’s chief executive, Andrea Vernier, told Inside Denim last year, the Recycrom process takes leftover cotton or cellulosic fabric scraps (sorted by colour) and grinds them into a powder through a largely mechanical, eight-step process to achieve its more eco-conscious pigments. These can then be used to dye and print on cotton, wool, nylon or any cellulosic and natural fibre or blend, the business says.

Both parties stated after the event that the present and future fashion industry must be tied to “circularity and upcycling without compromise” and anchor its production to already available resources, in addition to investing in more sustainable technologies.
