Gonser presents radical Mimikry concept

Mimikry, as its new patented process is called, was to be officially presented at Bluezone this month, before the Munich-based show decided to cancel its May edition. The company will be exhibiting at the next edition (August 30 & 31).
The new finish replaces the many stages of garment washing with … (wait for it) digital printing.
Alvise Arcaro, denim expert and consultant for Gonser Group, says that it truly replicates conventional washing and fading processes in look and feel. “Mimikry has been made possible by the evolution of digital printing machines, which no longer create a plastic hand feel, and by the high quality and resolution of our library of effects,” he says.
Mimikry has the potential to eliminate “hours of finishing and laundering stages,” he says. It can contribute to faster sampling. “It can also help young designers develop their own products, ultimately it makes jeans making more democratic,” says Mr Arcaro.
Needless to say, it ensures high replicability. Worn and faded jeans are printed on denim fabric before stitching. Actual frayed edges can be added after sewing.
Gonser has been testing the concept on all types of denim fabrics, including organic cotton denims. The company has chosen to use GOTS certified water-based inks, as part of its sustainable thinking.
With regards to authenticity, the company says there is virtually no difference between traditional washed fading and Mimikry fading.
A completely waterfree process, it significantly cuts many of the impacts of denim processing, from dyeing to washing. For Mr Arcaro, it is also very simple to understand by the consumer. “This technology can help raise awareness on what it takes to produce pre-faded, pre-worn jeans,” he says.
