Outland leans on lyocell for collaborative capsule
Australia’s Outland Denim has selected four pieces from a capsule wardrobe designed in collaboration with fashion brand Aje to debut at Australian Fashion Week.

The fabric in the collection is 43% lyocell, 40% recycled cotton and 17% organic cotton. The organic cotton is traceable to the Turkish farms on which it was harvested.

Outland Denim CEO James Bartle said: “We are incredibly proud of the collection and the level of technical skill that has been invested by our production team to achieve the final result with its many embedded intricacies. I cannot think of a truer embodiment of female empowerment.”

Each garment is made in Outland Denim’s vertically integrated production and finishing facility in Cambodia, which was founded to offer support, training and employment to young women who have experienced exploitation.

Last month, Outland announced on its website how a loss of business due to covid lockdowns when the brand was in its infancy had hit hard, with investors scared to loan money. Despite its best efforts, the company has moved its headquarters and closed one of its two Cambodian factories.

Mr Bartle said: “Outland Denim was founded as a practical response to a humanitarian need: the protection of young women from vulnerabilities to exploitation and human slavery through employment, training/skills acquisition, education, living wages and social support mechanisms. Covid has only exacerbated modern slavery and exploitation. And driven unemployment. So creating more work is even more crucial. We strongly desire to enter a period of “regrowth” to do this, and believe it is within grasp.”

Aje x Outland Denim collection includes a jean, shirt and mini skirt. They will be available to buy in October.
