Artists tell their 501 ‘pants stories’ in Shanghai

Levi’s Space is currently showing ‘Pants Stories’, an exhibition of works by six contemporary artists to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of Levi’s 501 jeans, in addition to the brand’s 170th anniversary, in Shanghai.

Curated alongside Project Singularity, the names of the participating creatives are Plastic Tree, ETH, Toy Huichuntang, Boilingman, Toi and Chose.

Levi's Space initially opened as a six-month, heritage-focused experiential pop-up along the city's Yuyuan Road last August.

Each artist has taken different pairs of 501s as their canvas, some creating textile-based murals, others exploring mixed media techniques and still more sticking to the overarching casualwear theme by producing an upcycled slouchy shoulder bag, for instance, and even taking a sculptural approach to an intact pair, dressed on a mannequin-like structure.

According to a Dao Insights report, the hashtag “150 years of 501” has been viewed more than 2.5 million times on Chinese social media platform Weibo since May.

Citing GlobeNewswire, Dao went on to suggest that the domestic denim jeans market is projected to exceed $15.5 billion in value by 2026.
