Japan exclusive marks 150 years of Levi’s 501s
Denim brand Levi’s permanent archive-inspired collection, Levi’s Vintage Clothing, has released its latest line exclusive to the Japanese market in celebration of the 150-year anniversary of its 501 jeans model, which debuted in the American West in 1873.

Previously, reproductions of 1966 and 1955-era 501s in Japanese selvedge denim have been well-received by the market.

This year’s anniversary edition takes the form of 501s from 1937, faithfully reissued from fit to hardware in locally made selvedge and featuring a red tab in the style of the original Levi's “Big E” from 1936. Japan exclusives like the 1937 501s are easily differentiated by use of Japanese katakana characters instead of English text.

The jeans, launched on February 14, can be purchased from Levi’s Harajuku flagship, in addition to stores in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and the city of Osaka, as well as online. They have a price tag of around $610 (¥81,400).
