Pakistan: academic support for denim companies on net-zero
Students from two Karachi institutions will work with four corporations in Pakistan to prepare detailed case studies on their progress towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The companies that have agreed to take part in the exercise include AGI Denim and Artistic Milliners.
Two teams of four students from the Institute of Business Administration and NED University of Engineering & Technology will visit the companies and prepare the case studies.
Their work will have the support of Pakistan’s local United Nations Global Compact initiative. The UN refers to the Global Compact as the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. More than 15,000 companies around the world and 4,000 non-business organisations are involved.
Participating companies have to commit to ten clearly defined principles to support corporate sustainability, with these principles coming from established UN treaties on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
Company leaders need to commit to bringing these principles into all aspects of the business, to share progress transparently and to support wider UN initiatives, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals the organisation set up in 2015. The work of the Karachi students will help Artistic Milliners and AGI Denim make important contributions this transparency effort.
President of Global Compact Network in Pakistan, Majyd Aziz, said strong links between academia and the corporate sector were important for the development of “sustainable and impactful businesses”.
A large proportion of the signatories to Net Zero Pakistan are mills and manufacturers in the denim supply chain. Inside Denim spoke to the mills to find out more.
