Hemp and nettle focus for Candiani
Italian mill Candiani has promoted its use of hemp in denim, alongside flax and Himalayan nettle, which is durable and resistant, yet soft and breathable, it said.
Like hemp, the rain-fed nettle fibres require no chemicals for growth and can absorb significant amounts of CO2. They also help stabilise areas prone to landslides.
The mill is also placing “strong emphasis” on recycled cotton, using both post-industrial and post-consumer recycled fibres.
To boost strength, it blends it with cotton from its proprietary Blue Seed, a hybrid variety that combines the quality of extra-long staple cotton with the durability of Upland cotton, it claims. Exclusive use enables it to create a traceable supply chain.
The company added: “We aim to select the best fibres and discover innovative, low-impact materials to minimise our environmental footprint while enhancing the quality, performance and aesthetics of our denim fabrics.”
