Oritain-verified Cone Denim free from ‘restricted’ cotton

US-based Cone Denim recently released the results of its first verification of origin audit through Oritain, a New Zealand company which specialises in scientifically verifying origin (to date, Oritain has mapped over 90% of the world’s cotton).
The results showed that all samples analysed across Cone Denim’s operations in China and Mexico were “compliant”, with “zero samples” being identified as originating from a “restricted risk origin” (as stated in Cone‘s cotton sourcing policy).
This means that, “with scientific certainty”, no cotton samples tested came from Syria, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan or the Xinjiang region of China. The mill will undergo quarterly audits to “ensure ongoing transparency and traceability”, it said.
President of Cone Denim, Steve Maggard, commented: “Oritain’s technology and process for verification is unique and provides documentable transparency that is admissible in a court of law, strengthening sustainable and ethical sourcing claims.
“Through scientific verification of cotton origin, our customers can be assured that Cone Denim products do not contain any cotton from prohibited regions, offering an elevated level of confidence and scientific peace of mind.”
