All eyes on indigo at AGI gallery show

Gallery@, a Manhattan-based contemporary art space by AGI Denim, will show indigo artworks as part of a group exhibition titled Exquisite Blue Towers from July 22 through August 6.

The thread which connects all three artists’ work is their depiction of tower buildings sited in three cities of personal significance: Biella, Medellín and New York. Early twentieth-century Surrealism was another key source of shared inspiration, AGI said.

Whether drawing, painting or printmaking, each work also incorporates Officina39’s eco-minded Recycrom pigments in some way.

One of the artists, Holly E Brown, will exhibit collograph prints on paper and repurposed denim, whereas painter and plastic artist Mauricio Arroyave has drawn from his 12 years as a denim showroom designer to create painted works using Recycrom, acrylic, pencil and graphite on paper. The work of Juan Manuel Gomez (De Ver Azul), meanwhile, creates mixed media works of drawing, painting and collage with indigo as his main medium. His creations also incorporate laser and bleach, informed by his past experience of working in a denim laundry.

Gallery director, Henry Wong, emphasised each of the artists’ “deep passion for denim” and “unique” style of working, adding that it was an exciting moment for the gallery as it supports each practitioner in sharing and relaying their vision.

AGI’s involvement extends to ongoing gallery and logistics support, as well as materials and marketing, it added.

An opening reception will be held at the gallery, located at 548 West 28th Street, at 6.30pm on July 21.
