Mango unveils first circularity-minded collection

Fashion brand Mango, headquartered in Barcelona, has released a partly recycled, but fully recyclable, early aughts-inspired collection of denim jeans, jackets, skirts and vests, which the label says is the first it has designed with circularity in mind.

Rivets and jacrons have been excluded, while trims have been reduced and elastane counts for up to 2% of the total fabric composition in styles where it is required. Cotton is the only other fibre used for each article’s body and, according to Mango, at least 20% recycled cotton is present in the blend.

Further, overproduction of samples has been mitigated via use of three-dimensional design and pattern-making software. Continued application of fellow Spanish company Jeanologia’s environmental impact measuring (EIM) tool during washing and finishing means the brand is able to keep an eye on its water consumption levels, it adds.

Mango, which published its list of tier three suppliers at the beginning of the year, launched its new sustainability strategy, Sustainable Vision 2030, in December. Among its new targets for product, planet and people, the brand said that it intends to increase circularity through simpler, more durable and “timeless” designs realised in accordance with low-waste principles, using Aitex-certified materials.

It became a founding member of Spain’s Association for Textile Waste Management earlier this month.

The brand also plans to work with only 100% “sustainable” cotton, 100% recycled polyester and 100% traceable cellulosic fibres “of controlled origin” by 2025. It will progressively phase out the Committed garment label, Mango added, which will be replaced by a QR code leading smartphone users to website-hosted information regarding product design, composition and production location.

The company expects to inaugurate its new, 22-hectare head office complex in Palau-solità I Plegamans next year. It has said previously that 100% of this site’s electrical energy consumption will come from renewables.
