Comprising a lightly washed flared jean and matching trucker jacket, both styles take 11.8-ounce denim as their canvas. This lighter weight enabled more faithful replication of “vintage” effects like fading, fraying and even garment repair marks, the collaborators have said, although silhouettes have been tweaked for a more contemporary fit, such as a dropped shoulder.
In line with New Manual’s own ethos, the objective was to recapture the best of “the good old days”, and denim’s knack for retelling the history of its wearer(s), through a modern lens – not simply reproduce past designs. Even a largely peeled-away back patch, more conspicuous in its absence by a localised intensity of indigo, features.
Apart from one button on the left sleeve, etched with New Manual branding, most other design details refer back to N Hoolywood and its founder.
New Manual launched last spring to shake up "outmoded" approaches to fashion design and production. Among its core team, the brand’s co-founders include creative lead Yutaka Fujihara and Yasuyuki Kawakami, one of the founders of the Kurashiki denim factory which made the fabrics, Yutori18.
Available now both online and in N Hoolywood's Japan-based boutiques, the co-created jacket and jeans retail for just under $500 (¥66,000) and $415 (¥55,000) respectively.
