HMS Designer Pen offers novel way to customise jeans

Working best on unwashed and coarser denim, the HMS Designer Pen works by abrading the fabric, allowing users to add whiskers and fades, artificially speeding up the ageing process and adding character.
The product was initially made for the owner of US-based brand Una Pluma, who asked if HMS could be made into a pen shape, after they discovered the rough stone could make permanent patterns on denim.
Beyza Baykan, managing director at Baytech, told Inside Denim: “We customised a HMS Pen for one of our brand customers and they loved it. We went on to explore it and made it more fun.”
Baytech launched the Pen through a series of workshops on the sidelines of Kingpins New York, in collaboration with denim mill Soorty, which provided fabrics for demonstrations.
The company is also in talks with universities and fashion schools to make the Pens available to students for design projects.
