ZDHC welcomes partners’ generosity on hazardous chemicals

The Sustainable Chemistry for the Textile Industry (SCTI), an industry alliance set up in 2020, and chemicals certification body Bluesign have said they will donate their Sustainable Chemistry Index methodology to the ZDHC initiative.

ZDHC said this represented “a great step forward in sustainable practices” that would “revolutionise chemical management in the textile industry”.

SCTI and Bluesign announced the development of the methodology in 2022, leveraging best available technologies and introducing a tool for a broader assessment of environmental impact.

According to ZDHC, despite industry efforts in recent years to tackle the problem of hazardous chemicals, the textile industry had struggled with “varying regulations, inconsistent data and a lack of common action”.

It added that SCTI and Bluesign’s donation of the methodology would foster industry-wide collaboration and help “make sustainable chemistry the norm”.
