Candiani sets up recycling network
As part of its commitment to sustainable innovation, Italian mill Candiana has created a new R&D programme, Re-Cyclone dedicated reducing waste and developing post-industrial and post-consumer recycled denim fabrics.

To increase its access to post-consumer waste, it has partnered with Humana People to People Italia, a garment collector that will set aside unwearable jeans and remove buttons, zippers, patches, etc. Filatura Astro will then shred and spin them into new yarns for Candiani. This local network will help expand the Milan-based mill’s access to post-consumer waste, but to scale up, it has also partnered with Sharabati, which operates a large production facility specialising in post-industrial textile recycling in Egypt.

To offer recycled denim fabrics having the necessary durability and quality, Candiani will mix the recycled yarns with its own Blue Seed cotton, whose superior quality and strength, it says, can compensate for the weakness of post-consumer recycled fibres. This will enable the company to increase the proportion of recycled content. The fabrics carry Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification and contain a minimum of 20% pre- or post-consumer recycled materials.

Five fabrics have been introduced to the Re-Cyclone programme: three references are made from 100% post-industrial recycled cotton, one is made from 57% post-industrial recycled cotton and another one is composed of 38% post-consumer recycled cotton.
