Hiut says first UK-made selvedge is ‘future of manufacturing’
Denim brand Hiut has launched its first UK selvedge line, made with fabric from Lancashire mill Hewitt Heritage Fabrics, and which it says has been a decade in the making.

Hiut, which is based in Cardigan, South Wales, was launched in 2011 following the closure of a former jeans factory in the town that made 35,000 pairs per week before going out of business.

David Hieatt, co-founder of Hiut, said:  “I spoke with Chris Hewitt [founder of Hewitt Heritage Fabrics] over a decade ago – a true denim maverick. Up until I spoke to him, I thought what we were doing was hard, but at least we still had a town full of Grand Masters. So, when he told me he was going to weave selvedge in Britain, I thought that would be a tough, tough ask. The industry had gone. There were no weavers, no looms.”

It took years to refine the fabric, which is made with organic cotton from Turkey and is woven on a 1950s Blackburn Northrop Shuttle loom.

The short run will be available in both men’s and women’s fits and each will have a leather back patch highlighting the journey between two maker homes, Cardigan and Lancashire.

Mr Hieatt added: “It is a great combination of experience mixed with innovation. That is where the future of manufacturing lies in the UK. We are proud to be a part of it.”
