Candiani x Valstar: a new spin on Italian classics

Italian denim manufacturer Candiani and specialist men’s outerwear maker Valstar, also based in Italy, have combined their expertise to create a capsule denim collection, Not for Gentlemen.

Comprising of two heritage Valstar styles, the Chore coat (originally worn by French workers) and the “iconic” Valstarino jacket (created by the brand in 1935, after the A1 flight jacket of US pilots), both silhouettes come in either indigo or ecru washes.

Three quarters of the collection has been made using Candiani’s SL7276 Sioux preshrunk selvedge denim fabric and features the mill’s own classic 72 warp, first designed by third-generation owner Gianluigi Candiani over 30 years ago.

Spun with cotton fibres, the denim has a “unique” and “authentic” character, which harks back to classic denim of decades past, a press release said.

Created with the mill’s easy fade Indigo Juice technology, which reportedly reduces the use of water and energy by 15% during the dyeing process, the redcast indigo Sioux denim also incorporates Candiani’s “100% biodegradable” V-sizing (a vegetal sizing compound) at this stage. According to the mill, V-sizing results in a microplastics-free dye process by replacing all hazardous chemicals, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).
