Cracking effects and ‘cost neutral’ Zero PP from Officina39

Italy’s Officina39 presented a range of new products at the recent Kingpins Amsterdam trade show, headlined by its Zero PP package of solutions.

A stumbling block for replacing potassium permanganate – a chemical used in fading indigo – has traditionally been cost, Andrea Venier, Officina’s managing director, told Inside Denim.

Its new Zero PP package offers various treatments in combination with ozone, nebulisation systems and lasers that achieve the looks and offer a “cost neutral proposition”.

Mr Vernier said: “Our job is to help our customers find solutions to replace permanganate, but being mindful of the cost. This package makes Zero PP affordable, giving the brands a proper solution to replace that effect. There is no excuse now – let’s replace permanganate as it is not good for the environment or for workers.”

Officina39 also presented Marvel Coating, a versatile new line of coatings that can transform denim and other fabrics with distinctive effects. From the cracked, reptilian textures of Marvel Crack (pictured) to the supple, vintage look of Marvel Pull-Up, the draping effect of Marvel Leather and the shiny Marvel Paint, these coatings offer new creative possibilities, said the company.

Officina39 has also improved and updated its EasyNdigo garment dyeing system, which originally was reduced using sodium hydrosulfite and caustic soda, now reducing it with DenimBlu and BluWit from Singapore-based Bluconnection. BluWit is a natural, salt-free and odourless reducing agent.

French brand Tenue de Nimes has embraced Recycrom Ready to Dye (dyes recycled from textiles waste) for its entire autumn-winter 2024-25 t-shirts and sweatshirts collection, and has become the first brand to commit exclusively to Recycrom for all future t-shirt productions.

Other novelties included Vintage Nylon, created in collaboration with an Italian laundry, adding vintage denim looks to 100% nylon garments; and a collaboration with Polygiene to add antimicrobial properties to its Recycrom recycled dye stuffs, meaning garments will stay fresher for longer, increasing their lifespans.
