The Tencel fabric is made with a special finishing technique, eco-efficient bleach treatment and Officina’s Aqualess sustainable wash process that saves up to 75% on water consumption compared with conventional wash processes.
Tuncay Kiliçkan, Lenzing’s head of global business development for denim, told Inside Denim: “In the past, zero cotton fabrics were known to have a softer feel, as in the case of Isko Cottonized using Tencel Modal among other fibre blends.
“This time, by joining forces, we’re able push the potential of zero cotton denim a step further, broadening possibilities in terms of design, aesthetics and hand feel.”
He commented that the partners created an authentic vintage denim look and a respectively drier hand feel.
He added: “The industry is constantly seeking material alternatives to cotton as its environmental impact becomes apparent. Tencel Lyocell fibres within the collection contribute to its overall environmental value, due to their responsible production process and wood source. Using Officina+39 ‘Aqualess’ wash process, the fabrics are also less-resource intensive. The collection demonstrates the scalability of zero cotton denim as not only a material alternative, but a new market standard as the industry looks beyond cotton denim.”
The collection will be showcased at the Lenzing booth during Kingpins New York, July 19 and 20.
Michael Lam, director of Advance Denim, added: “Our hope is that this collaboration will encourage industry-wide innovations for the sustainable development of the sector.”
