Woolmark sees potential in denim
A new Wool Denim Toolkit, recently released by Woolmark, and presented at PV Denim last week, gives an overview of the many possibilities for integrating the natural fibre into denims. “We’ve seen the presence of denim grow across major fashion brands, it is very trendy again, and the inherent performance properties of wool can only make denims better,” Birgit Gahlen, R&D manager for Woolmark, told Inside Denim.

Wool is usually used for the weft and left undyed, and this means it will be close to the skin, where it can deliver its thermoregulating, moisture management and odour resistant properties. “Woolmark recommends using fine merino wool, around 18.5 microns, and it is essential that it be machine washable,” added Ms Gahlen.

The toolkit was developed with various mills, including Berto and Pure Denim, as well as Tonello. Tests with Officina39’s Recycrom pigments were also conducted.
