Guess targets ‘eco’ denim in ESG update

Denim and fashion brand Guess has published its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report for 2022-23, in which it sets out a target for reaching 75% ‘eco’ denim by 2030.

Denim Eco are jeans made with at least 20% of environmentally preferred materials.

For 2022-23, the figure was 42% - a jump from 3% in 2020.

It aims to use 80% regenerative, recycled or organic cotton for all apparel brands by 2030, as well as use 80% recycled or biobased polyester for apparel mainline by 2025, and for all apparel brands by 2030.

The report also sets out progress towards emissions reduction, water usage and social targets.

It said in the report: “Considering that denim production significantly impacts water use due to various manufacturing stages that require water, Guess particularly focuses on denim suppliers that enhance water conservation measures.

"These measures may include implementing comprehensive water management strategies, optimising processes, investing in water-efficient technologies, and implementing water recycling systems within production facilities. These actions help minimize water consumption, reduce freshwater usage, and minimise the discharge of polluted water into the environment throughout the denim manufacturing process.

The company aims to be water positive in supply chain - replenishing more water than used – by 2035.

Guess CEO Carlos Alberini, said: “For well over a decade, Guess  has embedded environmental, social and governance priorities into all aspects of our business – and we couldn’t be prouder of the progress we have made as a result.

“We continue to anticipate a more heavily regulated environment for ESG practices, with an increased focus on transparency, integrity and accuracy in reporting ESG data.”
