Dyepro x Aware authenticates zero-water indigo dyeing

Amsterdam-headquartered self-described “clean-tech” company The Movement has joined forces with Turkish denim producer Calik to combine its authenticating traceability technology, Aware, with the latter’s Dyepro waterless indigo dyeing process to produce a new offering, Dyepro x Aware.

At the crux of this latest technology is the promise of a “completely traceable”, low-impact denim dyeing method, the two companies said.

They added that the fabric created is the “most advanced” sustainable and transparent option currently available in the denim-making market.

The method hinges on Aware’s tracer material being added to yarn, which is subsequently woven into denim fabric and dyed with indigo using Calik’s Dyepro. Crucially, Dyepro ensures zero water is used (as opposed to the conventional 20 litres of water per metre of fabric typically needed when dyeing denim with indigo, according to the two companies’ metrics).

The Aware technology then creates a “digital twin” for the fabric with blockchain, drawing from - and measuring against - the denim manufacturer’s independently validated environmental product declaration (EPD) impact data.

This generates a “unique fingerprint” for every final garment cut and sewn from denim dyed with Dyepro x Aware, which can be scanned and “read” to ascertain whether any water has been used in the indigo dyeing process. In turn, this can help customers differentiate between when denim has been authentically dyed using Dyepro - or not.

Together, the two firms can offer “honest and real sustainable solutions”, commented The Movement’s founder and managing director, Feico van der Veen.

Calik emphasised that Dyepro will replace all other indigo dyeing methods in its denim production by 2025.
