According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability. This represents 16% of the world's population or 1 in six people.
The collection seeks to address solutions for individuals with disabilities, various seated body types, dexterity challenges, amputees, and people who wear ankle foot orthosis. It includes the use of sensory-friendly materials, modular garments with easy closures, and styles accommodating prosthetics and braces.
"We’re proud to partner with Stephanie Thomas to create a collection that not only meets the needs of people with disabilities but celebrates their individuality and style," said Carl Chiara, global creative director of AGI Denim and The Agency. "This collaboration embodies our commitment to inclusivity, and we’re excited to share it with the world."
“Stephanie Thomas brought her invaluable insights to the collaboration, ensuring that every design element is both functional and fashionable using her award-winning Disability Fashion Styling System: Accessible, Smart, Fashionable. This system focuses on three key principles: accessibility, smart design for the wearer's health, and fashionable styles that are loved by the wearer and complement their body type and lifestyle.”
She said: "I showed the AGI Denim team how to use my Disability Fashion Styling System to prioritise disability in design. Unlike traditional denim, we finish garments before fitting models with disabilities to ensure they are accessible, smart and fashionable. Born with a disability, I view this collection as human-centric, honoring disabled, chronically ill, and injured bodies. While no collection suits everyone, this one makes accessibility enjoyable for all."
In terms of fabric assortment, special emphasis was placed on stretch, drape and softness, while maintaining the true essence of denim authenticity. The silhouette designs were inspired by Stephanie Thomas and ongoing trends coupled with AGI Denim’s three decades of expertise.
“Our goal was to provide clothes that are not only functional but also creative and stylish. I’ve noticed that much of the adaptive clothing available lacks style and aesthetic," added Mr Chiara. “We wanted to address that by offering something that looked great and was thoughtfully designed.”
